The maternity leave cover scheme enables schools to claim assistance for the costs of employing cover staff for maternity leave. Schools who wish to participate contribute to a pool, with contributions based on the number of full time equivalent staff employed by the school. Maternity leave claims will be paid out for 75 week days from the commencement of maternity. In addition to the summer holidays all school holiday periods falling within these 75 days will not be payable. The scheme includes adoption leave on the same basis as maternity leave. The calculation of contributions is based on the full time equivalent (fte) staff numbers permanently employed by the school as at January 2015, to be obtained from the school workforce census. If schools have for any reason not participated in the school workforce census, they must submit a payroll report for the January preceding the start of the financial year, certified by the headteacher to substantiate the number of fte staff permanently employed by the school at that time.
The reimbursement rates for 2015/16 are as follows
-Teachers (including NQTs and unqualified teachers): £150 per day
- Nursery Nurse: £150 per day
- Senior Admin Officer / Bursar: £150 per day
